Gunnedah Speedway Kicks off 2007/08 Season in the (W) Right Fashion

The Sprintcars made a welcome return to Gunnedah Speedway (North Western NSW) on Saturday night (October 13) to officially kick off the 2007/08 season it was multiple Australian Litre Sprintcar Champion Andrew Wright that claimed the feature race winning honours.

After being on of the quickest drivers amongst the 14 car field all night, Wright, managed to fend off challengers from both Roddy Bell-Bowen and Mark Blyton (guest driving in the Rob Allcock owned Maxim) throughout the feature race distance, to claim his maiden feature race win in Sprintcars since joining the premier class of Speedway some six years ago.

Both of Wright’s main challengers during the feature race, Bell-Bowen and Blyton, came to grief whilst fighting their way through lapped traffic. Bell-Bowen was up there fighting for the lead with Wright only to become entangled with a lapped car and crash out, whilst Blyton did similar with another lapped car on the 23rd lap and it was the latter crash that brought out the chequered flag to the 30-lap event.

In the end it was Wright that managed to master his way through lapped traffic around the tight confines of Gunnedah Speedway, and was rewarded with victory by defeating Adam Wray and Carl Trofa in second and third respectively.

For Wright this was his maiden feature race, and it has certainly been a tough road to get to this point.

“I would have thought we would have a feature race win under our belt by now, but we have been dogged by bad luck, and it’s great to finally get into the winners circle and get that feature race monkey off my back,” expressed a jubilant Wright.

“Gunnedah Speedway is a track that I have had a lot of experience around in Litre Sprintcars, but when you get into the Sprintcars, it’s a whole different deal, but it was a lot of fun as the Gunnedah Speedway promotion put together a wonderful track for us to race on.”

Wright said that it was a great result for the entire Wright Racing team and it was a very happy trip back to their home town of Muswellbrook, which is only a short two hours from the Gunnedah Speedway track.

“My team has had a lot of tough times in the past and to claim my first feature race win in Sprintcars has been a long time coming, and my family team have stuck by me and it’s great to finally be able to repay them with a win for all their hard efforts,” Wright added.

Heat wins earlier in the night for the Sprintcars were shared between Wright (x 2), Blyton, Trofa, Michael Matchett, and rookie Anthony Vysma
